Ponga is actually a fern and not a tree, and referred to as a "tree fern". The well-recognised pattern that can be seen on the trunk of a ponga is what remains after the fronds have died and fallen away. Ponga logs have been used historically by Māori for building structures and are nowadays incorporated into modern-day landscaping.
