Ian McTavish - Auckland

Ian McTavish is an Auckland-based artist with a lifelong passion for fishing and the ocean. After retiring from the corporate world in 2018, he built a studio in his garden in Herne Bay, where he now spends his days creating art inspired by the sea.

His work celebrates the beauty of both ocean and river fish, capturing their movement, colour, and character. Fishing isn't just a hobby for Ian; it's the heart of his creative process. Whether he's heading out into the outer Hauraki Gulf on a calm, cold June morning, rugged up with a thermos in hand, venturing out deep on a summer's day, or casting a line into a backcountry river in search of that elusive brown trout, he's constantly inspired by the deep blues and greens of the ocean and the flowing waters of New Zealand's rivers and lakes. He paints the fish he encounters.

Each piece he creates is a reflection of those moments: the quiet anticipation, the connection to nature, and the thrill of the catch.
