Pohutukawa Earrings

Inspired by the iconic flowers of our beloved Pōhutukawa trees, these playful fan-shaped earrings are handcrafted from up-cycled glass and sandblasted with a stylised design. Light and easy to wear, they’re perfect for brightening up your day with a touch of native charm. Designed and handmade right here in our workshop in Golden Bay from up-cycled bottles or windows and recycled sterling silver hooks.

Endemic to New Zealand, Pōhutukawa are lovingly referred to as the New Zealand Christmas Tree for the vibrant display of blazing red flowers they boast around Christmas time. As a member of the myrtle family, the flowers of Pōhutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) are made up of a mass of brightly coloured stamen giving them an unmistakable appearance, which attracts a good range of NZ native birds. Bees, bats, and native lizards will also feed on the nectar during flowering.

The trees have a prominent place in Maori mythology, where the red flowers represent the blood of Tawhaki, a spirit ancestor who fell and died showing people the way from earth to heaven. Pōhutukawa occur naturally in the upper half of the North Island, but can be found growing throughout the whole country.
