Amazing things about Kiwi 1) There are 5 species of Kiwi. 2) Kiwi have feathers that are like fur and moult throughout the year. 3) It is the only bird in the world with nostrils at the end of its beak. 4) Most birds only have one ovary but female Kiwi have two! 5) Sadly only about 5% of kiwi chicks hatched in the wild survive.
Manukura: the white Kiwi Manukura was born in the Pūkaha / Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre. The bird was born in May 2011 with a rare genetic condition that made it all white, instead of brown. She was named by Rangitāne leader, Mike Kawana; her name is the Māori word for "chiefly status." She passed away in 2020.
