Collection: Anne Daniel

Anne Daniel is a fibre artist based in Hokitika, working primarily with plant materials gathered from her local environment. Her bush-clad property and expansive garden continually inspire her practice, providing both the materials and creative spark for her work. Guided by head, hands, and heart, each piece evolves through direct engagement with the fibre itself.

Using a range of basketmaking techniques, Daniel creates works that sit between weaving and sculpture. Her practice includes woven wall works and sculptural objects, many of which have found homes in collections across Aotearoa and internationally.

Daniel was introduced to harakeke through a community flax weaving course in 2000 while still working in education. By 2014, aged 60, she was exhibiting and selling work beyond her hometown, gradually transitioning from teacher to full-time fibre artist.

She has presented three solo exhibitions, including The Shape of Gathering, from out of the blue gallery, Ōpunake, 2025, and Flora and Form, Left Bank Gallery, Greymouth, 2024. Daniel also regularly shows work in juried and open-call exhibitions, including Edge of the World, Waikawa Hall, The Catlins, where she was guest artist in 2025, and Between Fibre and Form, The Collaboration, New Plymouth, 2026.

Daniel has twice been a finalist in the Parkin Drawing Award, was a finalist in the inaugural Te Tai o Poutini Art Awards in 2020 and won the Creative Fibre Award in 2014.

She is currently working toward a solo exhibition at Hokitika Museum, scheduled for the end of 2026.
