Kowhaiwhai panels traditionally were used to illustrate whakapapa/genealogy.

These panels represent the male and female energy. The designs incorporate the importance of working together, understanding the power of aroha/love, family/whanau, and relationships.

These two pieces are sold separately, though would compliment each other perfectly. They are carved from Californian Redwood, Sequoia, with additional design using acrylic paints and wood stain, as well as feathers. Approximately 2.260m x 560mm.

Gordon Toi is a renowned multi-media artist based in Mapua. Well known for his carving and ta moko, Gordon has been traditionally carving since his teenage years and has since explored a range of art forms and mediums. The Coolstore Gallery has been fortunate in the past to host Gordon as an artist-in-residence, as many of our visitors still fondly recall.
